Install List

This is my list of programs to install on a fresh Ubuntu. I will continually add to it as things come up. If you want to install everything at once, check out the code at the bottom.

Ubuntu Tweakhttp://ubuntu-tweak.com/

A really handy app that opens up a wealth of useful settings.

Google Chromehttp://www.google.com/chrome

The extremely fast web browser from Google.

Skypehttp://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/linux/

Gimp

Gimp used to come default with Ubuntu. For whatever reason, this excellent image editor no longer comes pre-installed. Not to Worry!

sudo apt-get install gimp

Gnome-Do

With this program, I can search for and open programs and documents with a few keystrokes. Super + Spacebar, to be precise. This shortcut is customizable.

sudo apt-get install gnome-do

Ubuntu Restricted Extras

For me, this is essential. It installs flash, java, the mp3 codec, and more.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Wine

It is handy to be able to run the occasional windows app.

sudo apt-get install wine

Nautilus Open Terminal

This a small and convenient little app that adds an “open terminal here” in Nautilus.

sudo apt-get install nautilus-open-terminal

Got another suggestion? Leave a comment!

Install it all:

Run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner”

then:

sudo apt-get update

and finally:

sudo apt-get install gimp tweak skype gnome-do wine nautilus-open-terminal chromium-browser ubuntu-restricted-extras

do add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chromium-daily
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner”

I think there are a few areas missing:

    1. Torrent downloads : Transmission is very basic. I use Deluge. Heard muTorrent for Linux is in the pipeline too!

    2. Music : light and fast and Winampish – Audacious

    3. Videos : VLC

    4. Chat : Pidgin – because Empathy is a bit clunky.

    5. Twitter : TweetDeck is what I've been using but I had some issues with Adobe Air installation… The icon looks funny sometimes and app crashes occasionally too… wonder why. any idea?

VLC is a must. I don't like Google Chrome because it crashes too often for no reason. GIMP is a must. I also use Avant Window Navigator which is a dock.
